Creature: Tauntaun

Homeworld: Hoth

Height: 2.5 Metres

Diet: Omnivore
Also: Glacier Tauntaun, Climbing Tauntaun, Giant Tauntaun

Tauntauns are an omnivorous species that live on lichens found in the icy caves of Hoth. They are tall, matriarchal creatures that feature a mix of reptillian and mammal features, being that they have lack of mammal related glands(reptillian feature) as well as giving birth to live young with warm blood(mammal feature). They can give birth to up to two young at a time - twice in one standard Hoth year. They are covered in white and grey fur, long down-turned horns, four nostrils, have two tiny arms coming in between their sides and their chest and walk on two hind legs. Tauntauns can be domesticated and used as mounts - as they usually are - and many of them are tranferred offworld into cold-climates such as the polar caps of Coruscant, and used as mounts, tourist attraction and supply units. Many are preyed on by the Wampas of Hoth, i suppose you could say their somewhat rivals of Tauntauns, though the apart from their blunt horns and tiny claws, the Tauntauns aren't a challenge at all for a Wampa. However, they do have a something that the Wampa doesn't have... speed, which the Tauntauns have certainly have. Tauntauns can go up to 90 kilometres an hour in speed and would be unlikely for a Wampa to catch up, but with the strong adaption the Wampas have to the planet of Hoth, they do have the element of surprise. The wild Tauntauns of Hoth, undomesticated and unable to mount, often hang in large herds to around 20 to 30, in these large herds horn fights often erupt between males or females trying to claim their territory and claim themselves leader of the herd. A couple of Tauntauns can also be seen in the movie Star wars Empire Strikes Back, at the start of the film shows Luke Skywalker riding a Tauntaun before he spots a comet of some sort nearby, in the Hoth Echo Base further on, and riding on Han Solo before falling to its death due to the hurricane winds.
